Information Modeling
Successful communication between Business and IT requires a common frame of reference. To help create this, Information Modeling is an invaluable tool. With help from an information model it is possible to identity, structure and define precisely the information that is essential in a business area. By doing this you will get a common and well-defined business understanding that will provide a solid foundation for any database design.
Content: This course examines the techniques that are used for Information Modeling. You will learn how to interpret and design E/R diagrams and the principles behind how you design an Enterprise Information Model. You’ll get the skills needed for analyzing existing data models as well as designing new consistent data models. The course covers:
- An introduction to information and data modeling
- Entity/relationship (E/R) theory teaching you terms like entity, relationship, subtype, cardinality, redundancy and normalization
- Modeling E/R diagrams
- Understanding the different models used in Information Management: the Enterprise Information Model, Enterprise data Warehouse model as well as the dimensional models.
- Defining standards, formats etc.
- Moving from a logical design to a physical database design
The course includes a case story used throughout the course tied to practical exercises solved individual or in groups.
Target audience: This course applies to anyone who wishes to acquire a general, structured method to analyzing information. You’ll find the course relevant if you work with data modeling, business definitions, data definitions or Meta Data.
Attendee requirements: No specific requirements, but it would be an advantage to have a context for Information Modeling similar to what you get from e.g. the courses Data Warehouse Design – EDW Modeling or Data Mart design - Dimensional Modeling.
