Introduction to Master Data Management

Master Data Management (MDM) is a rather broad topic area that covers the various aspects of treating Master Data as a strategic resource. Master Data is the data used to monitor and control our business processes across systems and organizational units. MDM is about the structured management of this data in terms of definitions, governance, architecture, processes and monitoring to improve the quality. This introductory course will present the key challenges and solution approaches within the realm of MDM and data quality.
Content: The course examines the concepts that are used in Master Data Management and the starting point typically being the need for a common integrated set of Master Data. The course covers topics such as:

  • A definition of MDM – and the relationships between the operational and the Business Intelligence world.
  • What drivers lie behind a MDM project and in what situations should you start a project. Highlighting the importance of having a sustainable business case.
  • A short introduction to Platon Insight® (the Information Management best practice methodology).
  • Best practices on how to approach a MDM project in your organization.
  • Recommendations for an integrated Master Data architecture and the concept of Master Data Repository.
  • The role of Master Data in the company’s Information Supply Chain.
  • A definition of data quality and examples of the business value of having an appropriate level of data quality.
  • Short examination of technical disciplines – data profiling and data cleansing and harmonizing them with tool overview.
  • An introduction to the concept of Data Governance, which relates to organizational responsibility for data and its usage.
  • In introduction to a data quality monitoring concept
Target audience: The course is aimed at project managers and other participants in a Master Data Management project or program. It is also relevant for Business Intelligence and ERP professionals.
Attendee requirements: There are no requirements for attendees; however it is an advantage to have a good knowledge of the issues surrounding data quality and knowledge of how data is used across systems and processes in your company.
